It’s Not My Bag, Baby

Although I finished this purse many many weeks ago, today I came to the disturbing realization that it didn’t feel like a finished object until I had taken pictures of it for the blog. This probably has less to do with exhibitionist tendencies than it does with the fact that I refused to use the purse until I had taken photos of it, because I am distrustful enough of my “skills” to fear that as soon as I actually use the purse to carry things, it will fall apart. And I can’t have that happening until I take pictures.

It looks pretty good except for the flap. Unfortunately, the flap is a) horrible and b) the most prominent feature of the purse. Oops. It turns out that any wonkiness in my tension is easily apparent in garter stitch in cotton, although such wonkiness can remain undetected in stockinette. It also turns out that it was really unfortunate that I ran out of yarn when I did, because my weaving in ends in the area of the garter stich stripes made said wonkiness even worse. And although the button I chose is adorable, I must have been on crack to sew on a button that is so large and strangely-shaped, and also to decide that a yarnover would function as a fine buttonhole, instead of learning how to make a real buttonhole. Clearly I can’t be trusted to make these decisions on my own, but the pattern did not include a way to fasten the purse, and I would prefer not to spill my purse contents all over the place.

The pattern didn’t call for a lining, either, but I wanted to line it, so I bought a polyester scarf at the dollar store, cut it up, and sewed it in. It was easy enough that I didn’t make my mom help me with it, after all.

I don’t think I’ll use this purse much, as I’m not very happy with it (which you probably figured out from the post title — maybe it is literally my bag, but purse-onally, I don’t much like it).

My lengthy absence was because I moved into my boyfriend’s one-bedroom apartment where I couldn’t unpack any of my stuff because there was no room, and the entire building was being rewired so we had very sporadic access to his computer and the Internet. We have now moved into a two-bedroom apartment. Current projects include a ribbed scarf and slowly unpacking all the boxes in my new apartment. Very slowly.
