She Shoots, She Scores?

Although I had toyed with the idea of trying to knit a scarf during the Paralympics, I had to give that up as another impossible dream when schoolwork got in the way. I knew it was likely that would happen, though, as I’ve learned through experience that the surest way for me not to do something is to state on the Internet that I will do it, or that I am even considering doing it. I was, however, thrilled that Canada won the gold medal in men’s ice sledge hockey. One of those schoolwork things keeping me busy was a totally fun assignment a classmate and I did, creating an annotated bibliography of hockey books and web sites for kids aged eight to twelve. If you want to learn more about variations of hockey for players with disabilities, check out this page I found while working on the assignment.

I did eventually find the time to start Scarf #2, though. It’s ribbed. I was worried about it before I started, because if anyone can screw up something as simple as 2 x 2 ribbing, it’s me, but I knit a (very) little bit and it looked like 2 x 2 ribbing and not like a horrible mess, so I’m not as worried anymore. It looks a little bit looser than I want it to, though, so I’m going to rip it out and start it again on 5.5-mm needles (9 US) instead of 6-mm ones (10 US).

My first attempt at 2 x 2 ribbing

More details about Scarf #2 to come at a later date, because I’ve put that project on hold until I finish something else. Remember that change purse I started in December? The little dude who came on the airplane with me? The one I said I was gonna rip out and start over? Well, the other day I did rip him out, and I did start him over. And over. And over. And over again, eleventy billion times in all. (I counted.) I was just knitting way too tightly and it was a pain in the ass. Then I realized that I don’t (usually) knit too tightly with aluminum needles, so I should take this guy off the wooden 4.5-mms (8 US) and try him on metal ones. So I did that yesterday, and it went swimmingly.

By George, I think she's got it!

Although the picture is of three inches of stockinette, since it was taken I have added three inches of garter stitch. I’ve got to do two more inches of garter stitch, 15 stitches per row, and then make the flap of the change purse, which involves decreases. And a buttonhole. The decreasing I do not fear. The buttonhole inspires terror in my soul, as does the thought of sewing up the seams afterward. I have a seaming phobia, which is why instead of having a wristband, I have a purply strip of garter stitch. (Yes, I knit it ages ago but never bothered to blog about it. It’s not blogworthy. It’s a freakin’ wristband. Or, more accurately, it’s not even a wristband, it’s a freakin’ strip of garter stitch.)

In other news, I recently purchased a tiny yet exciting acquisition for Stash Baby, but I’ll blog about it another day, when I can take a picture of it in better light. Ooh. Mysterious.

I’m trying that 2×2 ribbing scarf from the SnB book too. I ripped mine out a couple of times too. BTW your pics are good.
